Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise) seeds

Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise) is a stunningly beautiful tropical plant. The seeds will usually germinate in 1-6 months. Germination can be erratic. Before sowing remove all the fluffy tufts from the seeds and then soak the seeds for 24h in hand warm water. Carefully press the seeds down in a bed of 100% coarse sand and keep the sand slightly moist at all times. Maintain high air humidity and temperatures around 25 °C. Stir the sand and seeds every 2 days and let some fresh air in. Seeds that have sprouted can be removed from the germination tray and planted in a seperate container in a mixture of 50% regular potting soil mixed with 50% coarse sand. Slowly decrease air humidity to prevent sudden drying of the leaves.
